Moving deeper into the practice
Two kinds of retreats
Renewing our Practice
Twice a month, our daily programme gives way to a retreat: a Gyōji Week and a Sesshin. During a Gyōji Week we look deeper into the various aspects of our daily temple life, while Sesshin retreats are devoted to intensive meditation. Each offers a different way to deepen our practice and life at Zen River.

Continuous Practice
Gyōji Week
Gyōji means ‘continuous practice’. Gyōji Weeks offer newcomers and experienced practitioners an opportunity to meet and practise together in an atmosphere that is less formal than during Sesshin.
Participants join the regular rhythm of life at Zen River, with meditation, work and the other practices that make up our daily programme.
For newcomers, a Gyōji week is a good way to become familiar with the temple, the community and our style of training. For experienced practitioners, it offers an opportunity to explore how intensive Zen practice can find its way into the rhythms of ordinary life.
Intensive meditation
Sesshin
Sesshin is a silent retreat dedicated to intensive sitting meditation.
The concentrated schedule includes many hours of zazen, strict silence, all meals in meditation (oryoki) and regular private interviews with the teacher (dokusan).
Sesshin may be a challenge, especially for newcomers, but they offer a powerful opportunity to let go of everyday distractions and completely focus on one thing: connecting deeper with our own mind.

Upcoming Retreats
Please look at our calendar, to find a retreat that suits your agenda. It is possible to join only a part of a Gyōji Week, if absolutely necessary. We do kindly ask all participants to join the entire length of a Sesshin.
